The Cave

Dry-tooling

The Mountain Project also offers one of the only dry tooling gyms in the US. "The Cave" is small, but mighty and allows training for all of your big mixed climbing and ice climbing endeavors.

The cave includes 20°, 25°, and vertical walls, as well as a completely horizontal roof. The Cave has holds that range from small metal holds representing small edges in Hyalite, all the way to large jugs you can swing from in the roof. The setting varies on the season, but often has routes to help you train for your podium finish in Ouray, or help you train for that big mixed climb in Hyalite.

Helmets are required, while gloves and protective glasses are recommended. A pair of "gym tools" live in the cave for anyone to use. ONLY use rock climbing shoes in the cave! No boots with crampons!

Coaching

Climbing

We offer one-on-one personalized coaching sessions with certified climbing coach Miriam Schlotzhauer and coach Danton Thon.

One-on-one coaching is a great way for athletes to focus on their particular needs with individual plans; beginners need to start at the base, while advanced climbers can set the bar higher and level up.

Coaching can include some or all of the following and more:

  • Structured training progression for climbers working towards a specific goal, trip, or climb season

  • Accountability and personalized workouts that adapt to your abilities and push you to grow

  • On the wall workouts & off the wall workouts

  • Climber specific exercises

  • Mindfulness / mental game

  • Injury Prevention

FAQ

  • Begin by signing up for Punchpass, purchasing a pass —if you’re new to the gym, your first time is free—reviewing our safety info and filling out an online waiver. Once you’ve completed these steps you can reserve a time in the gym or drop-in.

Waivers for minors can only be signed by a parent or guardian.

  • Yes, we encourage drop-ins! But, because we’re a small and intimate space, we cap the number of climbers training at one time to 24.

To climb with us there are two options: 1. Make a reservation in advance or 2. Check the online schedule and if there is room drop-in and check-in at the door.

Bouldering Gym time slots are two hours. You can come anytime during your reservation and stay longer if space permits.

  • Children 14 and older may train without a parent/guardian present. Children under 14 may train with parent supervision or if they have been ok-ed by the TMP staff. However, we ask that all using the bouldering facility are actively using the space to train and grow their climbing skills. We’re not a jungle gym or playground. :)

  • We recommend climbing shoes and a chalk bag. If you’re climbing in the dry tooling cave, helmets are required, and gloves and protective glasses are recommended. We are bouldering and dry tooling facility only. There is no rope climbing.

  • Please bring your own shoes and chalk. We do not currently have any for sale or rent.

  • There are inherent risks with bouldering that can lead to injury. It’s important that you read through and understand our rules and etiquette for the safety of yourself and other climbers. If you have questions, please ask any of our team.

  • Yes, anyone bouldering is able to use all gym equipment (ie. weights, treadmills, Ski-Erg etc.) and the shower facilities. During class times, gym equipment may not be available.

If you’d like to take one of our mountain sport specific classes those are an additional fee and require a reservation.
